Goonj in Singapore

Secondsguru supports the Reduce-Reuse-Recycle mantra and screams out a loud three cheers for India-based Goonj. Goonj is a social organisation that channels clothes and other urban discard from households that don’t need them to those who do. It collects donations in cities – ranging from school material to clothes to computers to even old doors – and moves them to far flung regions and less-privileged people across the country.

Goonj has done commendable, documented work in regions of India affected by natural disasters over the years under their Rahat initiative, as well as on an ongoing basis for the poorer strata of the society since 1999 when it was set up. If you want to be a part of this movement and help out, the Indian Women’s Association (IWA) of Singapore is running a collection drive for Goonj on 22nd Nov 2014 in Singapore at various venues in the city [details in poster].

Goonj is fantastic at extending the lives of items, not only rerouting but also recycling inventively to meet peoples’ needs. From waste cloths to sanitary pads, torn bedcovers to school bags, the transformations are impressive. That is the perfect amalgamation of recycling and charity. And that’s why Secondsguru digs Goonj!
