Earth Hour Singapore 2016 WWF
Join Earth Hour 2016 in Singapore to break a world record!

Do you switch the lights, fans, air con and electronic gadgets off when you are leaving the room or do you let them be, “just in case you come back”? If you are  in the second group (trust me, I was there at one time too) soaring electricity bills aside, please be aware that you are doing a huge disservice to planet Earth. If you already conscientiously turn off electric appliances and lights/fans when you leave a place, then good on you!

Whichever side you belong to, do join Earth Hour, an event organised globally by WWF (World Wildlife Fund) towards the end of March every year to garner supporters who are committed to save the planet. On this day people all over world switch off non-essential lights in their house from 8:30pm to 9:30 pm local time as a symbol of their commitment.

In Singapore, Earth Hour this year has a special significance with an attempt to break a previous world record.

When : 6 pm – 10 pm, Saturday the 19th of March 2016

Where: The Float at Marina Bay

Which world record? This year WWF is gathering support to create a world record by asking the supporters of Earth Hour to join in and stand in Tree Pose (Vrikshasana) for a short period of time. The current world record for group tree pose is of 2276 people. As per the Earth Hour 2016 events page on Facebook, as of Tuesday March 8th there are 299 confirmed participants going, and 636 interested! So, come on, let’s get together and help set this new world record!

What else? There will be entertainment galore by local bands and celebrities who are supporting the cause. From 8:30-9:30 pm you can see the skyline of Singapore alter as iconic buildings in the city turn off the lights in support of climate change.

Some facts about Earth Hour:

– In case you can’t join in the tree pose at The Float at Marina Bay, please do turn off the non-essentials lights and electric appliances in your home from 8:30- 9:30 pm on Saturday the 19th of March.

– Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, a single city, and today close to 70,000 cities participate in this global movement to combat climate change.

So no lights at all? Please turn off only the non-essential lights and if you must, use soy (buy here) or Beeswax candles(store in Singapore) or even LED candles (where to buy in Singapore?)
