Finally, a trashless race we can get behind!
Calling all EcoWarriors and motivated runners to join National Geographics’s Earth Day Run on April 17. This will be Singapore’s first zero-waste, zero-carbon footprint mass public race. It will take place concurrently in Hong Kong, Manila, Taichung and Shanghai. The organizers are promoting fund-raising for WWF on a reforestation project that has direct impact on the region’s haze problem.
Another run, ho-hum. Is it really different? You bet! First, it sets the tone on how mass public events should be organised. With no race packs, no water bottles handed out – that’s already a huge improvement on the way these runs are, well, usually run. In addition, the event is pulling no punches in avoiding food wastage, using clean energy for the event, and several more initiatives. It is truly unique.
Will it be fun? If you like to go your own way, absolutely! There is no set route. You start where you want – just make sure you finish at the the F1 Pit Building by 10 am. And when you reach, you’ll be at a carnival! Don’t forget to ask your friends and family to join you there.
Carnival? Are you serious? Yes. In fact, the EcoCarnival starts a day earlier (on 12pm, April 16) and ends on the race day (2pm, April 17). One of the key aims of the Earth Day Run is to support local environmental advocacy. So you can expect to see local green groups (such as us!), eco-products, Singapore sports personalities pedaling to generate clean energy for the event, movie screenings, star gazing, and more! (See key event timings below)
So how do I sign up? The carnival requires no sign up. You can sign up here for the race. There is no entrance fees. However – you do need to complete 4 pre-defined Green Actions and donate a minimum of $1 to WWF’s reforestation project in Sumatra.
