Yoga has absolutely nothing to do with fashion but let’s face it – we all like to look good whether in our Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Dog pose), Virabhadrasana (Warrior pose) or Vriksha Asana (Tree pose).
The fashion industry has definitely picked up on the worldwide yoga craze and we can feel it in their wide line of yoga apparel at steep prices. Look around in the stores or online for a pair of comfortable, colourful yoga pants now and you will notice that as soon as the word yoga appears stamped on the label the price seems to triple. Pretty silly considering the practice of yoga is supposed to be humble, not greedy. Still, it is understandable that the idea of showing up to the Hot Yoga or Hatha Yoga class in our ragged sweatpants and washed out sports bras isn’t exactly appealing. Simply because everyone else in there is rather well turned out!
But wait, that doesn’t mean you have to go out and spend a fortune on a work-out-fit though; you can just make your own!
Start out with a good old closet raid. Dump all the contents of your drawers out on the bed and sort through your T-shirts, tops and tunics. Now this might be hard – heart breaking even – but put aside a pile of all the things you haven’t worn in months (Our guide to decluttering can help you out!). A little voice inside you will say: Oh! but maybe one day… It might be hard to resist that voice at first, but you’re just going to have to stay strong here: The day will never come. It’s time to say your goodbyes now – but not for long.
Over-skirts are really easy to make from stretchy long-fitted tank tops, T-shirts or tunics. They will look great worn over your leggings and will keep your butt nice and warm while you’re meditating. All you need is a pair of good scissors, to cut a straight line from armpit to armpit. The bottom half is now already perfectly shaped as a skirt. If the fabric is stretchy enough, you won’t even have to sew in a waist band. The skirt will hold in place and you can fold it over the way you want it, creating a wrinkled effect. If the fabric isn’t stretchy enough, an elastic band can be sewn in easily.
Depending on the style and fabric of the garment you used, you might now have a sports-bra sized top half left. If it fits you like a small work-out top you can put that to good use too! Just wear it over your usual work out gear and add some funk. The same thing applies here: If the fabric is stretchy enough you will not have to sew the bottom lining of the top.
The worst part here is the actually parting with old clothes, the rest is a simple, painless process that will result in one stylish Yoga outfit.
